Silverstein Pavilion
Cancer Treatment Center
After the successful completion of a similar cancer treatment center on a tight, inner city hospital site,AEC. was commissioned to complete the design, documentation, bidding and construction administration of HUP’s new Cancer Treatment Center. The space designated for the Center was the existing first floor and lower level of the Silverstein Pavilion. No disruption in operation at the existing cancer treatment center could be tolerated, and power for day-to-day functions had to be maintained with minimal fluctuation.
Four new linear accelerators and two new simulators were installed and were shielded with high-density concrete and lead bricks. Customized mechanical systems were designed to heat, air condition and stabilize the relative humidity of the treatment center, along with the accelerator and simulator rooms. New mechanical systems had to be crane-erected on the roof of the existing hospital, and new vertical shafts were cut from the roof through each floor of the Silverstein Pavilion to supply the new Center.
The project was phased and completed over a five-year period, with minimal disruption of the existing operations in the Silverstein Pavilion.
